The New Year is traditionally a time of new beginnings, changing habits, doing something new, and having no money. What better time to eat fruits and veggies, get a head start with health and find a more compassionate and just outlook on life! Vegetable, fruits, nuts, beans, seeds and grains can be vastly cheaper whilst you recover from the excesses of Christmas, and you will find that eating ‘like you give a damn’ will help your heart in more ways than one! Seriously though, you still may want to eat out and about and theres a great guide to help you do this that covers the majority of Cornwall’s eateries, take aways, bars and cafes. Its called VeganCornwall and it is an amazing collection of experienced reviews. Where to shop for food and what to replace certain foods with is another question we all get asked regularly when starting out vegan. Many foods that you already buy will be suitable, read the labels and especially the allergen advice as this will highlight or bold many common allergens which you can then avoid. If you are severely allergic, however, you may already know not to to consume certain processed foods as the ‘may contain’ means that it has been made in an area or factory where allergens are present. Milk and egg are easy to spot in these sections. Many supermarkets are now producing their own lists of products SFV-suitable for vegans- and are often quite good at labelling their own brand products, (these lists from VeganWomble are excellent). In addition, you can find some up to date info on the Veganuary site too!
More and more the shift towards vegan food and drink is mainstreaming into the supermarkets. A recent photograph taken in Tesco shows the wealth and extent of plant milks there are available .. and when you’ve found one you like, you can always give making it yourself a go too! (should the desire arise..).
When you have taken a few steps around getting ingredients, it may be time for your first dinner party. One of the most accessible sites for this is Buddhist Chef, I guarantee your mouth will start to water just looking at the pictures!
