Being vegan in Cornwall is getting easier and easier to achieve as cafes, restaurants and destinations respond to the rise in veganism across the county.

We’ve had coverage UK wide just this week, lively, informative and sure to bring the visitors flocking, read about the new-look Newquay from Chantal Da Silva in The Independent.
Chantal writes, “The first time I planned a trip to Newquay, friends and coworkers were quick to warn me: “It’s a party town.” Like many Britons, they conjured images of streets packed with stag- and hen-dos and beaches bestrewn with hungover students recovering from a night out.
“Perhaps that’s why I was so surprised to discover a tranquil town so different from the one described when I arrived in Newquay. Clean beaches awaited me, dotted with a handful of surfers; I spotted more independent restaurants and bars than dance clubs and the frequency of the town seemed far more in tune with the ebb and flow of the waves of Fistral Beach than the booming soundscape of a busy nightclub.” read more
Chantal’s writing takes us on a surf lovers journey around Newquay’s changing sands, from the Tom Thumb and Jam Jar to the Green Heart Cafe, a favourite amongst vegan travellers and surfers alike!
Sprout not only offers the best of whole and healthy food, but a relaxing, cosy cafe off the main street and instore events for health, wellbeing and healing, nutrition and lifestyle.
This was the title of our first free vegan food tasting event in Tintagel, held in the Old School. And this question raised a great deal of interest, we were busy all day. Many people came, tried foods and talked with us about what we had on offer, sourcing products, the recipes, as well as aspects of seeking to live a more compassionate lifestyle.
We offered a variety of foods, some home-made, some ready made. We shared samples of cous-cous, roasted vegetables, houmous, sushi, sausage rolls, nut roast, curry, pasties, scones and a wide range of dairy-free cheeses. There were a number of tempting desserts on offer, so often lacking or unimaginative when we eat out. We offered truffles, cheesecakes, chocolate pecan tart, meringues, chocolate cake with coconut cream. We shared a variety of milks, accompaniments, breakfast cereals, etc.
We aimed to show that vegan food is exciting, flavoursome and no more expensive than any other way of eating.
Several companies were very generous in supporting the event, for example, Holland and Barrett, Tesco, and Pengenna Pasties, who gave us a big range of their products to share. We owe all these companies enormous thanks for their support.
We made up a small booklet of the recipes of the foods we shared, which sold out on the day! We had leaflets on different vegan related topics supplied by Animal Aid. Also, we made some of our favourite cook books available for people to peruse.
Most food was gone by the mid afternoon. We had many fruitful discussions, on recipes, on where to source products, on nutrition, how to remove gluten from some products, on the ethics of living vegan and the issues that surround it aside from diet. Since the event, people have shared pictures of food they have made from the recipe booklet, and given positive feedback about the things they tasted with new intentions to source items we shared they had not known about before.
Everybody was made to feel welcome and the event proved to be very popular. We are now planning a future event in Tintagel, and intend to do the same in other towns in North Cornwall.
In addition, Edwina is planning to create a vegan night, starting around Easter, every Friday night at Anniden in Tintagel, profits going to various animal charities. Look out for details of both…

If you are curious about what mindfulness is, or have previous experience of it, do come along and find out a little about it or revisit what you have learned. The workshop will be around an hour long, experiential, invitational and friendly.
Mindfulness is about being present in our lives and bringing awareness and compassion to our experience. I will supply mats and blankets, just turn up!

1.35 till 2.20 Vita Sleigh “Vegan Feminism: why animal abuse hurts us all”
Vita is a lifelong vegan and is in her final year at Falmouth University. Her interest in thinking critically about feminism and peacefulness to animals met when she read “The Sexual Politics of Meat” by Carol J Adams. Her talk will explore the idea that true feminism should include the struggle for animals’ rights, and similarly that patriarchal (sexist) thinking undermines and limits effective vegan advocacy. It will also explore the practical ways that these -isms manifest themselves in the other’s movement – speciesism within the feminist movement, and sexism within the animal rights movement. It will explore and discuss the alternative – intersectionality.
2.20 till 3.05 Jack Common “Crossing the Barrier: Evolutionary Biology and Animal Rights”
Jack is a PhD student studying evolutionary biology at the University of Exeter. His transition to veganism was instigated by an understanding that our scientific knowledge regarding other animals can be intimately connected to our emotional responses to them. In his talk, Jack will explore common misunderstandings about other animals, and show how modern evolutionary thinking lends firm support to non-human sentience, animal rights, and veganism.
3.05 till 3.50 Bethany Chester “Eating the World Alive”
Bethany is a writer, blogger and activist with a passion for animal rights and the environment. Her talk will explore how our food choices can help or hurt the environment, and how you can empower yourselves for the helpful choices.
4.15 till 5.00 Amanda Forster-Searle “How to thrive and be a healthy vegan“
Amanda is a Nutritionist, Meta Health Stress & Wellbeing Coach & Reiki Practitioner at Nourish Healing in Cornwall.
Her talk will guide you through how to ensure you eat healthily following a vegan plant-based diet, looking at key nutritional needs alongside plenty of delicious ideas to help you thrive.
At FireDance Pizza we have always taken our responsibility to run our business with as little impact on the environment very seriously. We are taking these ideals to the next level and have created a full vegan menu. We have both preferred a plant based diet for thirty years and became vegan two years ago.
We pride ourselves on our ability to prepare a wide variety of toppings and having made the decision to create a full vegan menu, we are keen to offer the same range of choice to those who have made the decision to consume more responsibly.
As vegans ourselves we are ideally qualified to offer tasty vegan treats to our customers and have been careful to ensure that our vegan recipes are as tasty (if not tastier) than our regular pizzas.
In order to create our delicious vegan cheese topping we use a blend of vegan cheese, nutritional yeast flakes and olive oil. We have never used dairy or eggs in our breads and have processes in place, and a five-star hygiene rating from Cornwall Council, ensuring that no vegan pizza is ever contaminated with meat or dairy products.
You will be able to order from our full vegan menu, which is nearly finalised and included here to get your taste buds working, from Wednesday 1st February 2017. Until then you can still grab one of our currently available vegan pizzas; the Vegan Vegetali, the Vegan Supreme (all the vegetables) and our Margherita, plus we are now able to make Vegan Garlic Breads, with or without cheese… they are delicious. Our new menu will include vegan alternatives to many of our most popular pizza toppings. Using vegan Quorn ™ and tofu we are able to create vegan pizzas that surpass the tastes and textures of other meaty offerings.

We caught up with Danielle in darkest Pool, near Camborne and she told us the secrets of Vood Food..
“I would like to introduce to you my vendor business: Vood Bar. We are a brand new venture and all of our products are 100% vegan friendly. We are a mobile catering outlet and you’ll find us at local events, festivals and weddings. We pride ourselves on our cooking; all of our scrumptious food is homemade from scratch and we believe this shines through in the quality and taste of our products.”
During test events and tasting evenings, we found that our vegan outlook is just as popular with non-vegans as it is with our ‘fundamentalists’. Our delicious meals are bursting with flavours and there really is something for everyone!
Customers can also purchase hot and cold beverages with their food including fabulous cocktails as we are fully licenced! We always aim to showcase around 5 different cocktails in order to maximise choice. They of course are 100% vegan-friendly too and are freshly made to order.
We are very excited about our journey and look forward to sharing this venture with our fellow ‘Voodies’..
the Earthlings Experience brings to the public the realities of modern day farming practices and industry standard and commonplace everyday activities that enable the meat, dairy and egg industries, as well as those that produce goods such as leather and fur to take living creatures and turn them into money.
Some of the footage is very upsetting, most of it is hidden from the view of those that participate in the suffering of billions of animals unaware of what happens before they exchange their pounds for flesh, largely because if they were to see, could they carry on buying with that knowing?
It’s an old saying that knowledge is power. We give you that knowledge in order that you empower yourself with the facts and make the decision your heart and your head would agree on.

The New Year is traditionally a time of new beginnings, changing habits, doing something new, and having no money. Seriously though, you still may want to eat out and about and theres a great guide to help you do this that covers the majority of Cornwall’s eateries, take aways, bars and cafes. Its called VeganCornwall and it is an amazing collection of experienced reviews. Please though, if theres anything you notice that has changed, drop them a line, they will be happy and grateful that you took the time to let them know of any updates and changes!
Where to shop for food and what to replace certain foods with is another question we all get asked regularly when starting out vegan. Many foods that you already buy will be suitable, read the labels and especially the allergen advice as this will highlight or bold many common allergens which you can then avoid. If you are severely allergic, however, you may already know not to to consume certain processed foods as the ‘may contain’ means that it has been made in an area or factory where allergens are present. Milk and egg are easy to spot in these sections. Many supermarkets are now producing their own lists of products SFV-suitable for vegans- and are often quite good at labelling their own brand products, (these lists from VeganWomble are excellent). In addition, you can find some up to date info on the Veganuary site too!
More and more the shift towards vegan food and drink is mainstreaming into the supermarkets. A recent photograph taken in Tesco shows the wealth and extent of plant milks there are available .. and when you’ve found one you like, you can always give making it yourself a go too! (should the desire arise..).
When you have taken a few steps around getting ingredients, it may be time for your first dinner party. One of the most accessible sites for this is Buddhist Chef, I guarantee your mouth will start to water just looking at the pictures!

Stepping lightly on the earth is important to us, so as well as avoiding harm to animals by being vegan, we take the environment seriously, and most waste goes into our compost bins, up to Bleujennow Crafts to be upcycled, or recycled. We have solar panels on the roof, high energy performance ratings on all our machines, and reduce water use as much as possible. You are on holiday, so your comfort is our first priority, but we hope you will also be aware of reducing waste and energy!
We also want to encourage you to come by public transport, so we provide free pick-up and drop-off to and from the train and bus stations. To help you travel light, we have available lots of things to borrow. Cot, highchairs, changing mat, baby bath, books, toys for babies and toddlers; beach towels, beach chairs, body boards, wet suits, buckets and spades for the beach; wellies and backpack for walks. In the house, we have slippers and bathrobes provided.
Michael Housevegan guest house situated on the rugged north coast, Treknow nr Tintagel. The house was built by a Cornish family, with locally quarried slate and stone, about one hundred years ago and was transformed into an entirely vegetarian/vegan guest house in 1995. Vanessa and Simon Lackford took over the guest house in 2004. Vanessa also practices mindfulness; and the guest house is home to both dogs and cats. You can be picked up from the nearest train station if travelling by train or bus.
